We can communicate and collaborate as a project team when we use server software designed for these purposes, particularly when we use collaborative software such as SharePoint 2013. Plus having the project plan saved on the project manager’s desktop in itself makes it difficult for the team to collaborate on the project tasks. I have always found the software quite useful for managing my project plans, but I have also found using the client software also always makes it difficult to communicate the project plans, especially since Project isn’t a part of the Office suite and most stakeholders might not have it installed. I am quite adept at using the Microsoft Project client software, having taken a few training courses on it plus several years of experience in planning and managing projects using the software. If the project manager is the only one managing the project plan file, it puts the onus on them to collect the tasks, and likely, they begin to naturally fall into a position where they have to chase down detailed plans or they have to decide the task list on their own. This ideal of collaborative project planning and tracking might be difficult to achieve simply because of the nature of using client software such as Microsoft Project. Yet this does not all strictly fall on the project manager’s lap the project team needs to drive the process while the project manager merely facilitates and tracks the activities. Building project plans and tracking project progress marks the essence of project management.
